Reed is the best boyfriend I’ve ever had. He keeps me buried in flowers and candy, to the point where my desk is almost completely full of the various and assorted trinkets he keeps sending me. It’s a running joke around Valentine that he’s going to keep the local floral shop afloat personally. All in all, not bad press for a mayor running for re-election against Baron von Evil.

It turns out that dating me really has been great for Reed’s reputation. People in town are apparently big fans of our awkward, mismatched romance. And I mean, why wouldn’t they be? Everyone loves a Cinderella story, and Reed makes one hell of a Prince Charming.

Like I summoned him by thinking about him, he comes waltzing into my office with his jacket slung over his shoulder. His grin is enough to melt panties all over town. I feel my own mouth curling up into a smile. Gross. Now we’re going to get all gooey with each other every time we meet up. I almost hate how cute we are together.

“Kar, I’m taking you to lunch. I’ve got great news and we’re going to celebrate.”

“Oh, but Mister Mayor, that’s my line.” I bounce a little in my seat. “Look, it has to be a quick lunch. I need to go to my interview with the branch manager this afternoon, and everything should be a go for the loan.”

“I’m so happy for you.” He strides toward me, and I rise from my chair to meet him. He presses his smiling mouth against mine, and I can feel his happiness in his kiss. I knew he would have been ready to celebrate with me whether he was my boyfriend or not, but I like the kissing boyfriend version of Reed much more.

We hold hands and walk to lunch at Dingho, our favorite little Chinese restaurant. We even share each other’s meals, and mostly make goo-goo eyes at each other instead of talking. He lets me eat almost all of his noodles, and even lets me have his fortune cookie.

We head back toward Riddles, and Reed’s exceptionally muscled arm snuggles tight around me. “Oh, what was your news?” I was so busy being in girlfriend mode with him that I am actually failing at being a good friend. Girlfriend. Whatever I’m supposed to be doing.

“The senator asked me to meet him at his local office this afternoon. I think he’s actually considering dropping out of the race, Kar.” His megawatt smile makes everything better. So does the casual little hand squeeze he gives me, because even our hands are cuddling with one another.

“Well, come and meet up with me afterward, and we’ll celebrate naked at the palace.” I spin in a little circle. “I’ll even buy you a drink later. You know, with all my money.”

“Deal.” He makes a little finger wave at me, and then lopes off to do politician things.

Meanwhile, I check through my portfolio for the eleventh time. All the paperwork the bank requested is sorted and tabbed for easy reference.
